Three models

Choose your board

There are 3 models to choose from: a 1220 x 380 x 8 mm flex belly board / paipo; a 1250 x 400 x 20 mm polystyrene core, cork railed belly board / paipo; and a larger similarly designed one at 1370 x 420 x 20 mm.

Over the years David has also developed several hand plane models and a mini paipo.

Materials and construction

Built from thoughtful materials

Brock Hand Shapes boards are constructed from 2 mm laminated paulownia sheets, with a polystyrene core and cork rails. The result is a board that balances lightness, flex, and durability without losing the warmth of a handcrafted timber finish.

Paulownia is a strong, lightweight timber that suits surf craft well. It keeps the boards lively in the water, gives them a clean natural grain, and helps each piece feel like something made to be kept as well as surfed.

David also uses glue and oil products chosen to be less toxic than many conventional alternatives, keeping the build process more considered from the shed through to the final finish.

About David

Built in a Brisbane shed, one board at a time

Hi, I’m David and thank-you for dropping by.

Brock Hand Shapes is the culmination of a lifetime in and around the ocean. I have been a surfer for as long as I can remember, and after decades on the tools I have found a real love in crafting wooden surf craft by hand.

Based 10 km north west of the Brisbane CBD, I produce limited numbers from my 80 year old hardwood shed. Every board is made with care, shaped slowly, and built to be surfed, handled, and appreciated for years to come.

What I enjoy most is the balance between function and feel. I want these boards to be fun in the water, but also beautiful objects in their own right, with the warmth and character that only comes from being made by hand.

Surfing has always been part of my life, and making these boards is a way of staying close to that feeling, while creating something personal for others who love the sea as much as I do.
